One Man's Dream - From Mickey Mouse to the Magic Kingdom

This walkthrough ride and movie details the life of Walt Disney, from his early years growing up in the mid-west through to his death, and beyond with developments of the enterprise that he dreamed of.

Entrance

The entrance takes you through a photo-montage of his early life, where he develops his first cartoons. There are also drawings that Walt made during his early education mounted on the walls. As you walk through, the ambient music playing is a medly of songs from Mary Poppins, one of Walt's all-time favorite movies that he produced.

At the end of the walking tour, you are escorted into a theatre where you watch a movie named "One Man's Dream". The movie is a short biography on Walt Disney.

Displays

  • There is a large display of the development that took place in designing and building Disneyland.
  • Development cycle of EPCOT Center.

Influences

  • Working as a salesman in his teen years, Walt would work on trains as a salesman. This would later influence his love of trains. In addition this would be the formenting of his development of the "Carolwood Pacific Railroad", a miniature railroad he setup in his backyard in 1949.
  • Walt saw a screening of the 1916 silent movie Snow White, which would later cause him to create his classic animated feature.
  • Some of the vacations that Walt took influenced his creation of the Jungle Cruise ride and the formation of Adventureland.

Artifacts

  • Walt Disney's 2nd grade desk from grade school.
  • Some early toys are shown in a display case from the Disney collection. Included in this collection are some Lionel trains, whose Disney contract apparently brought them back from bankruptcy.
  • An animation table is setup to show how animation was created in the early years.
  • A multiplane camera is setup to show how depth of field was created by Walt. This was also a first when it came to animation.
  • A miniature diarama of "Granny's Cabin" is set up. On the outside you can see the wiring used to create the effects inside this diarama.
  • A prototype of the "Dancing Man" is set up, which depicts Walt's interest in animatronics.
  • Mickey Mouse Club memorabilia is shown in another display case.
  • Some props from 20000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Interesting Facts

  • Walt's boyhood hero was Abraham Lincoln. Apparently in gradeschool Walt would put together a costume to look like President Lincoln and go from classroom to classroom reciting the Gettysburg Address to the different classes.
  • The first full-color animated film of any kind was the 1932 animated short Flowers and Trees, a part of the Silly Symphonies series. This would later garner Walt his first Academy Award.
